Many people have questions about the definition of trauma, wondering if what they experienced is considered to be a trauma. Trauma is either a singular event or series of events that has had a profound, negative impact on you. Trauma comes in many forms, and can have a variety of different repercussions, including negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, difficulty trusting others, and feeling like you cannot live your life to the fullest. Trauma is also subjective, meaning that an event might feel more impactful to you than to someone else because of your unique history, biology, and current life circumstances. What matters most in defining trauma is the personal effect on you.
