Religious Trauma

Growing up in a religious environment, especially one that is conservative or fundamentalist, can leave a lasting negative impact, even after leaving your faith. When you walk away, it is not only from a set of beliefs- it is also from the familiar, a worldview that once guided you, a community, and likely friends and family. To say this process is more complex than meets the eye is an understatement.

Religious trauma happens when we feel the lasting effects of our former religious beliefs and environment show up in ways that cause damage to our current life. This could look like pervasive feelings of shame and guilt that you cannot shake, low self-worth, strong self-judgment, existential dread, not knowing who you are, embarrassment and dysfunction around sexuality, struggling to feel like you fit in, perfectionism, and nightmares.

If this is something you resonate with, I want to offer you hope. Although the daunting nature of religious trauma makes it seem insurmountable, you do not have to suffer alone. I would love to help you.
